Shaolin Warriors to appear at Forest Festival
Shaolin Warriors to appear at Forest Festival

Direct from China and for the first time ever in Europe, the world famous Shaolin Warriors will be appearing in the parade and in the arena at this year’s Heart of the Forest Festival, sponsored by AB Produce. The internationally acclaimed warriors have chosen the Festival as their last UK venue, before heading off on the final leg of their tour across Europe.

Theresa Brown, Festival Entertainment Manager said “This is a major scoop for the Festival, and a real treat for the community, as they will be treated to a session taken from their breathtaking theatrical Kung Fu show, which vividly depicts the rarely-seen Kung Fu masters’ feats of agility, strength and skill, using Buddhist meditation and their rigorous martial arts training. The Shaolin Warriors have been a huge hit across the globe, astounding audiences of all ages, and it’s a real honour for us to host them here in Measham.” More »

The Heart of the Forest Festival continues to grow, and now has the significant honour of being the largest village parade and festival in North West Leicestershire. Put that together with a whole afternoon of free entertainment, a world class act from China and a spectacular display of motorcycle stunts from two of the best riders in Europe, and Measham is certainly putting itself on the map as the beating heart of the new National Forest.

Businesses big and small have dug deep, even in this time of economic recession, to give the local communities in the area a day of celebration. Measham may be the

host, but this is a day for all families and friends in the greater area to come together and enjoy a great day of fun and entertainment.

Bob Bissell, Festival Chairman said “ Where else in this country can you take a family out for the day, see a great parade, get free entry to an afternoon of top quality entertainment, and only pay for the ice creams. This year we also welcome the support of the Leicester Caribbean Carnival team, who will be providing costumes for local people in the parade, backed up by the rhythm of Birmingham’s premier samba band, before then being greeted on to the Festival Grounds to the sounds of a traditional Caribbean steel band. It’s definitely a day that should be in everyone’s diary

The Parade will commence at 11.30am on Saturday 27th June from the far end of Leicester Road, making its way through the village to the Measham Leisure Grounds, where the festivities continue for the remainder of the afternoon. Those wishing to attend the Festival, who are travelling by car, are encouraged to arrive in good time and use the Car Park at the rear of the High St shops, accessible from Bosworth Rd. Parking at the Festival grounds will be limited to disabled visitors only.

Measham Prepares For Major Summer Festival
Measham Prepares For Major Summer Festival

What do the Coventry Corps of Drums, Birmingham’s Premier Samba Band, and costumes from the Leicester Caribbean Carnival all have in common? They will all be joining the Donisthorpe Scout Band in a spectacular parade of colour and music through the streets of Measham, for this year’s Heart of the Forest Festival.

Bookings for this year’s parade are already up on last year, and organisers are promising to provide one of the best parades that this part of Leicestershire has ever witnessed. The parade will start at 11.30am on Saturday 27th June and steadily make it’s way through the Village to the Festival Grounds at Measham Leisure Centre, where free entrance to an action packed afternoon of entertainment is guaranteed. More »

Parade Manager, Rodney Ashworth said “The Heart of the Forest Festival is open to anyone who lives or works in the central area of the National Forest, and we would certainly like to see more Villages taking an active part in the parade. The day is already promising to be quite a spectacle, but we are organising an open family workshop at the Measham Leisure Centre on the afternoon of Friday 29th May, to give people a hand with their ideas and their involvement in the Parade.”

“Artists and helpers will be on hand all afternoon, so grandparents, mums and dads, teenagers, and of course children, are all welcome to come and join us for as little or as long as they want. We have a host of wonderful materials to help create great artistic pieces or perhaps smaller pieces that you can carry or wear during the Parade.
So, come on, this is your chance to be part of the Heart of the Forest Festival.”

Once the Parade has arrived at the Festival Grounds, visitors will be greeted with a free afternoon of entertainment for all ages. From marching bands to birds of prey, from steel bands to motorcycle stunt teams, and not forgetting a fly-past from a World War 2 RAF Dakota. There will also be free donkey rides for the children, as well as clowns, jugglers and the ever popular Punch & Judy.

For the grown ups there will be plenty of stalls to visit and activities to try out. We will also have many forestry crafts people on site, from coracle makers to chain-saw sculptors, you may even wish to get a village or pub team together and try your hand against other villages in the Festival ‘Tug of War’ competition. This is not for the faint-hearted, but when village pride is at stake, be ready for some energetic encounters. Can the Shoulder of Mutton in Oakthorpe hold on to their crown?

The Heart of the Forest Festival has been created by volunteers, working on behalf of the greater community, to create a family day of celebration and entertainment for everyone to enjoy. For more information on how to get involved, or just to find out what’s on and where, please go to www.heartoftheforest.co.uk or give us a call on the Festival Information Line 07512 973924. « Less

Battery Recycling Available At Measham Community Office
Battery Recycling Available At Measham Community Office

Household Battery Recycling is now available at Measham Community Office.

Why recycle Batteries? Around 600 million UK household batteries are sent to landfill unnecessarily every year, that is the equivalent weight of
110 Jumbo Jets. Throwing batteries in a landfill site is harmful to the environment and a waste of a resource. Batteries are a unique product made from mixtures of heavy metals, acids and alkalines. These elements can threaten our environment if not properly discarded. They expose the environment to lead and acid and the heavy metals they contain may potentially leak from landfills. More »

So please bring along your household batteries to the Community Office where they can be safely taken away for recycling. « Less

Car Crime on the Increase!
Car Crime on the Increase!

Police are receiving more complaints than usual in relation to car crime. Thefts of, and from cars are increasing. The recent cold weather has also resulted in a number of cars being stolen, because their owners have left them with the engines running to warm up, either outside their homes, on their driveways, or even outside the local shop, whilst the driver “nipped inside” to collect a newspaper. This is an absolute gift to criminals. Don`t invite crime. Prevent it!

Doorstep Callers
Doorstep Callers

Various doorstep sellers are working in the North West Leicestershire area. Some callers may be legitimate, and some may be bogus. Be safe. Don`t take chances. If you don`t know, and are not expecting any callers, don`t open the door to them. You can speak to them through the closed front door. Ask them to write to you, to make an appointment, then you can arrange to have someone with you when they next visit. Be in control and say “No” to doorstep callers. If you want to introduce a No Cold Calling Zone in your street, contact Steve Hastings at Coalville Police Station, tel: 0116 248 3043 for more information.
